Our university’s basketball team had won the championship for the year in March. This was a stellar performance on their part, and being the chairperson of the student union, I felt it was our duty to host a party to celebrate their win. The team was also celebrating a decade of their existence. I got my preparation team together and got down to coming up with different birthday party ideas. The theme of the party was centered on basketball. We decided that we were going to host the party in the basketball court of the university’s gym. The cheerleading squad was also involved in the preparation of the party. This was because they knew the basketball team best.
For the invitations, we handed out invitation cards with the Indiana University stickers stuck on them, to all the students around campus. Inside the cards, we wrote the details of the venue and the time that the party was going to start. The card stated “Welcome to the Slam Dunk Party.” We also requested the guests to dress in the team’s jersey colors.
We used mini-folding chairs for the guests to sit on within the venue. The room was also decorated with balloons and streamers in orange and black colors. The party table was sprinkled with confetti and basketball cards. The ceiling of the basketball gym was also decorated with small miniature basketballs. We also had a basketball balloon holder as the centerpiece hanging from the middle of the room. Outside the party venue, as the guests walked up the foot path they were treated to still shot photos of past basketball game events. They were displayed as slide shows on the screens.
Food and Drinks
The guests were served with burgers, meatball pizza, hotdogs and chicken which were grilled and roasted. There was also served popcorns, pretzels and chips in popcorn bags. Drinks such as fruit punch, sports drinks, root beer and lemonade were also served. The birthday cake was shaped like a basketball, though it's pretty predictable :)
Games and Activities
The party had the guests watching previous game matches by the team. They also danced to various music jams that suited the theme. This included soul music, and Jock Jams. There was also a dribbling game for some of the guests who attended the party. The guests were also asked to compete by showcasing their various dance moves on the basketball floor. It was quite entertaining to see the guests doing different types of street dance. The dance moves were surely not for the faint hearted. I cringed every time I saw someone twirling with their head.
The guests left the party with gift bags that contained bandannas, and basketball big band bracelets that were customized with our team’s name. There were also temporary basketball tattoos in the package. The guests left with plans to either go back to their dorm rooms, while others continued the party in other areas. These included social clubs, and houses that were hosting other parties for the night.
