I was finally hitting the 30th mark in my years of life. 30th birthday party ideas were very far from my mind. The situation was quite depressing for me, because as much as I had a high flying career, I still hadn’t settled down and had a family. My boyfriend didn’t even seem to be in a hurry to propose marriage to me. I knew that we had to discuss the issue later as we progressed, but I had a party to plan for the moment. The 30th birthday party idea that I settled on was a Treinta theme party. Treinta is a Spanish word that translates to thirty. The event would showcase as my “coming out” party. It would be a way of shedding of my skin of past mistakes and starting over a new.
For the invitation cards, I used blank orange cards, which I glued small crepe-paper fringes to the top and bottom. I also stuck a sombrero picture in the middle of the card. Inside the cards, I wrote “Come and have a Siesta, Fiesta”. I also included the time and venue for the party.
I decorated the party using crepe-paper streamers in different shades of bright colors such as yellow, orange, fuchsia etc. There were also pink and white balloons lining the door frames and walls of the party room. The party wouldn’t have been complete without a piñata hanging in the middle of the room. It was filled with different kinds of chocolates and candies. I also used box cut paper lanterns, attached to pink ribbons to decorate the room. As the centre piece of the table, I got different colored sun flowers placed within a vase to provide the table with a vibrant look.
Food and Drinks
The party wouldn’t have made sense without Mexican food being part of it. This included Nachos, Tamales, roasted pork and Spanish rice. We also couldn’t miss out on cooking some chili dishes for the event such as menudo. I also added a few normal food stuffs such as burgers, steaks and hotdogs into the menu. The drinks included tequilas, margaritas and Paloma coolers (a mixed drink of tequila and grape juice). For the non-alcoholic drinkers’ pina-colada juice, lime juice, and root beer was theirs for the taking. The birthday cake was shaped like a sombrero hat with miniature cactus shaped cupcakes surrounding it.
Games and Activities
For the birthday games, we had a spoon and bean relay. This is whereby the guests were divided into two teams. They would pick a bean from a bowl filled with beans, and run to the other end of the field with a bean on their spoon to fill an empty bowl. We also mimicked our favorite actors and actresses from the Mexican soap operas. Mexican music played throughout the party whereby we danced to salsa music, and even tried our best to tango as we fell over one another laughing hysterically.
As the guests prepared to leave I gave them gift bags filled with bandannas, fiesta maracas and Mexican jewelry.
